Bill's book gives voice to people behind the energy industry
An unprecedented insight into the remarkable achievements of the ordinary
folk who founded the UK oil and gas industry, is given in a new book by
M&M Media associate Bill Mackie.
The Oilmen (Birlinn, £14.99) is based on the testimonies
of dozens of people from across the world, who came together in the North
Sea from the early 1970s onwards, to lay the foundations and create the
hardware for an industry that revolutionised the UK economy and brought
thousands flocking to the North-east of Scotland to live and work.
Bills book reveals in words and pictures the humour, tragedy and
monumental effort that define the industrys past. It also provides
an entertaining, academically-researched record of the milestones that
marked the journey from the wild old days to a more sober
and safety-conscious present, and highlights the issues that energy majors
and service companies must address right now if they are genuinely committed
to a sustainable future in the North Sea.
Bills sequel to The Oilmen this time focusing on the
industrys onshore community - will be launched next autumn.
