Judy's new drugs guide helps parents communicate with youngsters
A new self-help book, Drugs - A Parents Guide (Need2Know,
£8.99), written by M&M Media partner Judy Mackie, has been launched
this month to provide easily accessible and down-to-earth information
that cuts through the haze of hype and hysteria surrounding drugs and
young people.
The book, which contains a comprehensive A-Z of most drugs that are misused
today, together with their history, legal status and upside
and downside effects, as described by young users, is an update
on a similar book Judy had published by Need2Know, in 1997, and reflects
her interest in writing about education and health.
Judy says: Despite the wealth of information now available from
the NHS, the Internet, schools, police, drugs agencies and support groups,
there is still a great deal of myth and mystery surrounding drugs and
their effects. Many parents and other adults feel anxious or out of their
depth when it comes to discussing with young people the drug-related risks
and choices they will and do - encounter as they are growing up.
My book, based on the latest education and health research and best practice,
aims to give parents and other adults the basic knowledge, communication
skills and confidence to start talking.
The book also signposts a diverse range of organisations that can provide
readers with further support and information.
